Ahmet Muhtar Ataman was born in Istanbul in 1896.
After primary school he continued his education at the Alliance Israelite school which taught in French. He gained expertise especially in the area of musicology. Although he didn't have any form of musical education he managed to teach himself. Ahmet Muhtar Ataman knew French, Italian and Jewish and apart from his compositions he is also a well-known for his translations in musicology.
Ahmet Muhtar Ataman wrote the very well known children songs Annem and Yaşasın Okulumuz.
